If you know InDesign, you already know where things are

Spreads, parent pages, frames, the Control panel, styles and swatches sit where your hands expect them. Every page below was laid out and rendered by DesignCraft.

Feature opener titled Notes on the Grid with a FEATURE · DESIGN kicker, an italic deck, a wide landscape picture with a caption and two columns of justified body text

Styles do the formatting

Kicker, headline, deck, caption and body text each come from a paragraph or character style. Change a style once and every paragraph that uses it follows, across the whole document.

A three-column page of justified, hyphenated text wrapping around a shaded pull quote

Type set with care

A Knuth–Plass paragraph composer, dictionary hyphenation, justification with word, letter and glyph scaling, optical margin alignment, columns, a baseline grid and text wrap. Line breaks on screen match the PDF.

A Coming Next page on a plum background with four labeled swatch circles, one of them a CMYK process color

Color made for print

Named swatches in CMYK, RGB or Lab, with tints and gradients. Export PDF/X-4 for a print shop or PDF/A-2b for archiving, with bleed and crop marks when you need them.

A magazine cover with a dusk landscape in a full-bleed frame and the white serif headline The Quiet Art of Layout

Pages, frames and parent pages

Spreads and facing pages, parent pages for folios and running heads, layers, and graphic frames that bleed off the edge. The layout follows InDesign, so the tools sit where you expect them.

AI tools · bring your own key

Pictures and copy for your layout, from the model you already pay for

Open the AI panel next to the canvas, paste an OpenAI, Google Gemini or OpenRouter key, and generate images or write the words for a page. One click places the result in your document, just as if you had dragged the file in.

Requests go from your browser to the provider. We never see your key, prompts, images or text, and we add no markup.

How the AI tools work
  • Images for framesCover photos, openers, spot illustrations and textures, in page-friendly shapes
  • CopyHeadlines, decks, body text, pull quotes, captions and flyer text
  • Rewrite to fitShorten, expand, fit to a word count, change the tone, proofread or translate

What designcraft.run adds

The editor is the release build, byte for byte. Around it we add a few things the bare build doesn’t have.

Always the latest release

Each new DesignCraft release is checked against its published SHA-256 checksum and deployed here. You are on v0.6.0.

AI panel on your own key

Generate images and write copy with OpenAI, Gemini or OpenRouter models, straight from the browser, and place the results in your document.

Guides for the browser build

How to open an IDML file without InDesign and how to make a print-ready flyer, written for what the web version really does.

Nothing to sign up for

No account, no watermark, no upload. Close the tab and nothing of yours is left on a server.

Getting started

Three steps

  1. Open the editor. The first visit downloads the app, about 12 MB compressed, and it is cached after that. The start screen offers New file, Open and Open sample magazine.
  2. Add your content. Use File › Place… or drag files onto the canvas: PNG, JPEG, TIFF, PSD, SVG or PDF pictures, and Word, RTF or plain text for stories. Draw frames with the Rectangle Frame and Type tools.
  3. Save and export. File › Save downloads a .designcraft file you can open again. File › Export PDF…, Export Page as PNG…, Export IDML… and Export EPUB… download the finished work.

DesignCraft is pre-alpha. Expect rough edges, and save often: the browser version has no autosave. Use the menus rather than shortcuts like ⌘N, which the browser keeps for itself.

FAQ

Questions

Is DesignCraft Online free?

Yes. DesignCraft is free and open source, there is no account, and nothing is locked behind a plan. The optional AI tools use your own API key, so any AI usage is billed by your provider, not by us.

Is this the official DesignCraft site?

No. This is an independent site. It hosts the unmodified web build that the ArtCraft team publishes with each DesignCraft release on GitHub, keeps it on the latest version, and adds guides and an AI panel around it.

Can it open InDesign files?

It opens and saves IDML, the InDesign Markup format, which InDesign can export. It cannot open .indd files yet; that is the top file-format gap on the project’s list. Ask for an IDML when someone sends you an InDesign document.

Are my documents uploaded anywhere?

No. DesignCraft runs inside your browser with WebAssembly. Opening, editing, saving and exporting all happen on your device; files open from your disk and save back as downloads. The only exception is the AI panel, which sends your prompt straight to the AI provider whose key you entered.

Does it save my work automatically?

No. The browser version has no autosave or crash recovery, so use File › Save, which downloads a .designcraft file, before you close or reload the tab. The desktop app recovers unsaved documents after a crash.

Which fonts can I use?

The browser build carries its own fonts: Source Serif 4, Source Sans 3, Inter and JetBrains Mono, plus BIZ UDPGothic for Japanese. A web page cannot use the fonts installed on your computer, so text in other fonts is drawn with a substitute. The desktop app uses your installed fonts.

Which browsers work?

A current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari with WebGPU or WebGL2. DesignCraft uses WebGPU when it can and falls back to WebGL2 on its own. A laptop or desktop with a mouse is strongly recommended.

Is it ready for professional work?

Not yet. DesignCraft is pre-alpha. Most layout features are in place, but you cannot yet thread text from one frame to another by hand (long text flows with autoflow when you place it), and IDML files can reflow slightly differently from InDesign. It is good for flyers, posters, single pages and experiments today.
